Mod Bungalow

I never quite know what I'm going to find inside a new clients home but given the architecture of D.C., I can count on great surprises behind those doors - historic rowhomes with original molding and amazing character, condos with great views and amble light, and sometimes a mod bungalow set in a quiet cozy street in Arlington. It was love at first site when I walked in this door - bright colors, bold patterns, and rich velvets. As you probably know or at least can tell, I adore mid century lines but tend to sway more boho than mod when it comes to finishes. I was excited for a new space, especially one in which the client had already selected great pieces (she has beautiful taste!!) and just needed guidance on bringing everything together.

The family room offers amazing natural light - with amble windows and high ceilings. While the furniture was existing, I rearranged things so the blue mod chairs could sit as a pair, added mustard yellow, black, and white mud cloth throw pillows, a fiddle leaf tree, and vintage mid century mirrors framing a colorful Judith Gigliotti print. This is the perfect family space that can handle a sofa full of kids but is also chic enough to host a dinner party.

As the center room of the house, the living room is the pathway to every room on the main floor - we wanted to maximize seating while also maximizing walking space in every direction. And he mustard yellow leather french arm chairs are stunning..really they just sing to you but they are not loungers and therefore not actually that comfortable when you are looking to kick back with a book by the fire. I decided to move these to other spaces in the living room and add a pair of ivory velvet arm chairs with brass legs that you could really cuddle up in. The original mirror coffee table was truly beautiful but just too large for the space so we added a smaller table that I customized by painting the base gold. I repurposed existing end tables, styled new accessories, added fresh artwork, and paired soft pillows and throws throughout the space. With this fireplace on, you could sit here for days!

My favorite piece in the living room is absolutely the piano. A classic- that just needed a face lift to match the mod house. Artist, Unique by Ruth, painted the piano a custom blue grey in house and I finished it off with a faux fur bench, pair of gold lamps, and marble book ends to store their great collection of music. I truly wished I played the piano because I want a piece like this for myself!

With a Jonathan Adler table and chairs, colorful rug, and starburst chandelier already in place, the dining room was well on its way without me. But just to make sure it wasn't left out, I styled the built ins with existing accessories, swapped in brass cabinet knobs, and this chic gold bowl just a bit off center.

While often forgotten, entry ways really do and should set the stage for the rest of your house and let's face it, a lot of people may not even make it past your console table so why not wow them?! This gorgeous grey/gold console table, starburst mirror (which I repurposed by painting gold), and black/white runner do just that, while this small space leading to the living room includes all things practical for a family house- mod coat hooks and baskets. Practical can absolutely be beautiful!

Cheers mod bungalow! XOXO, Caroline Sources:
