The Little Modern Engine That Could

Summer has been so busy with moving, house renovations, limited school time for Hans, and pregnancy that I have spent every spare second working on current projects - failing to share the spaces we have completed across the last few months. I promise to change that in the coming weeks, so let's start with this classically modern big boy room!

Knowing this client's style from our personal friendship and having Emily assist me with designs, we were able to get this space going twice as fast as normal! Did I mention how much I love Emily and how helpful she is?! I already knew she was crushing social media but I did not realize the impact she would have on my design effectiveness and turn around time!

The goal for this room was to create a modern space that also reflects traditional trains, planes, and automobiles that would carry this three year old many years. To start we knew we wanted to lighten things up a bit with fresh paint, leverage the empty alcove space to provide storage, and remove the old school accordion closet doors to modernize lines. We discussed adding cherry closet doors to match the remainder of the historic house but decided it was not worth the extra expense for a closet that also needs to provide easy access to toys and clothes for little hands.

I love the way the white curtains brighten things up beyond the fresh paint and provide a clean line while also giving coverage.

The custom floating cherry shelves in the alcove provide book and toy storage while also adding a bit of that wooden texture we wanted to carry into the space from the other rooms in the house. Perfect compromise!

The client selected this wooden/iron bunk bed - which we completed with transportation sheets, neutral chambray duvets, and a railroad crossing sign throw pillow. Below the bed is a soft grey/white striped rug that anchors the space and provides a soft playing space. The window coverings were all Emily and I love the addition of the modern Swiss cross!

The walls are a mix of vintage prints and functional wire baskets - another perfect marriage of old and new. And the vintage dresser provided the perfect space to display a vintage wooden train.
